Amazon has announced that it has purchased a game development studio: Double Helix Games. The deal bought the IP owned by the game studio and includes the employees as well. There is no indication of what the financial terms of the deal include.
Double Helix Games has been around since 2007 and was the result of the merging of two game studios, The Collective and Shiny Entertainment. The studios 75 employees will now work for Amazon and will continue to operate from the same location in Orange County.
Amazon has been rumored to be working on its own game console and this deal adds some weight to that rumor. Amazon would certainly need appealing first-party titles if any game console is to succeed on the market.
Some popular games from the firm include Earthworm Jim, Sacrifice, MDK, and Enter the Matrix. The most popular game from Double Helix, however, is Killer Instinct. The current line of games and future titles for the studio will continue to be supported.
