Amazon to Bring in 50,000 Holiday Hires

Amazon will be pulling in 50,000 new temporary employees for the holiday season in an effort to ramp up production.    The 50,000 seasonal employees will be sent to fulfillment centers throughout the United States. According to Amazon, it is hiring slightly more seasonal workers than last year, yet didn’t offer a number for the 2011 holiday season.    “Temporary associates play a critical role in meeting increased customer demand during the holiday season, and we expect thousands of temporary associates will stay on in full-time positions,” said Dave Clark, vice president of Global Customer Fulfillment at Amazon.   Amazon’s new hiring spree matches the number of seasonal employees being brought in to the brick and mortar stores. Wal-Mart said it’s also hiring about 50,000 seasonal workers, but Target is going above and beyond with 80,000-90,000 new employees.   It looks like Amazon could certainly use the extra hands, considering it’s releasing the new Kindle Fire HD line in time for the holiday season. Announced in early September, the Kindle Fire HD line will consist of a refreshed 7-inch model for $199, an 8.9-inch model for $299 and a 4G LTE model for $499. Amazon is also offering a data package for only $50 per year, which includes 250MB of bandwidth per month, 20GB of cloud storage space and a $10 Appstore credit.    The 7-inch model was released September 14, but the 8.9-inch and 4G LTE models won’t launch until November 20…only three days before Black Friday.
