Android Instant Tethering Only Works for Pixel and Nexus Handsets

Unfortunately, Instant Tethering is a feature that only works with Google Pixel and Nexus devices that run Android 7.1.1 Nougat. The bonus here is that the any of the connected devices can be the hotspot allowing greater flexibility in the connections.

As great as Instant Tethering is, there are currently some restrictions.

1.   Instant Tethering is currently only compatible with Google Pixel and Nexus devices running Android 7.1.1 Nougat.  You will need to get the Nougat update if you want to take advantage of this feature.

2.   Only your Android devices can provide a hotspot. The Nexus 9 and Pixel C smartphones can only connect to a hotspot that is provided by your devices through Instant Tethering.

3.   If you have a device running Android 6.0 Marshmallow, you can connect to a hotspot provided by a device running Instant Tethering.

4.   Instant Tethering is achieved via Bluetooth. This allows you to connect between devices as you move out of range from one device and into range with another.
